why i don’t do specific wardrobe guides

Wardrobe guides seem to be all the rage with photographers right now, particularly with senior photographers.

From one perspective, I get it. You want to provide a service to your client and help them along the way as they prep for their senior session. (Or family session, or headshot session.) A wardrobe guide can hold your client’s hand and walk them through the planning process.

But…

Some of the guides out there will point a client into a specific look. While not specifically stating it, they can allude to certain looks being better than others. You must have a flowy dress. You must have a hat. You must have sunnies. You must wear a graphic tee from a band you’ve never listened to.

That’s fantastic for some people, but not everyone goes for this style.

I like to suggest patterns and colors to avoid for your session. I like to make sure that your session’s outfits lead to a balanced, well-rounded session. I mention accessories if that’s going to be your thing. But these are all suggestions. Wear what you want. Wear what makes you comfortable and proud. It’s your session, not mine.

I give you simple, but intentionally vague suggestions that you can keep in mind while shopping in stores or in your closet. This will help you choose pieces that will flatter and be perfect in photos, while still retaining who you are. Because that’s 100% the goal of a portrait session.
