The unposed portrait. A image that just happens rather than being planned. These are my favorite types of images.
I always tell my clients that from the time our session begins, my camera is always on duty. Yes, I'll find a flattering pose for them, and yes, I'll tell them to smile and take the photo. But in between, my camera is still firing. I look for authentic smiles, laughs, and sometimes even eye rolls. (Never directed towards me, of course...) I'm watching for looks between husband and wife or between siblings that shows more about their relationship than a posed photo ever will.
I've started transitioning my portrait sessions to include more and more unposed portraits. I'll always include the classic posed photos that many people love, but I've found from my clients that the images that resonate with them the most, are the unposed ones. It's when a mother gets to see the true expressions of her children. These images pull at the heartstrings in the best possible way.
Or maybe instead of capturing smiles and laughs, you instead find an image demonstrating the curiosity of a child in one of their favorite places. Feelings and emotions come through in the candid moments, and that's exactly what I like to capture with my photography.
