Senior portrait sessions. I remember being in high school, looking forward to the day I would get to do my portrait session. I looked forward to having a day all about me, when I could choose various outfits that would represent who I was at this milestone time of my life. It was all so exciting.
Senior sessions have changed a bit since my day, though. Now that every high school student has a camera on them at all times, taking photos and being in front of a camera is nothing special to them. So while some still really look forward to their senior sessions, I believe it's not quite the same as it was back then. That's why as photographers, we need to step it up a notch and be sure to give our seniors just a bit more than they can get from the photos they take with their phones or that are taken by a non-photographer with a DSLR.
Adding a hair and makeup session turns the senior portrait session into a senior portrait experience. These girls get some time to relax and be pampered before stepping out and having portraits taken...which is surprisingly exhausting work! And while that in and of itself is a fantastic reason to have hair and makeup done before your senior session, it's not the real reason why I love it.
I love hair and makeup for a senior session because I've watched girls come in to hair and makeup one way and leave a completely different person. While I know that how we look shouldn't be important to us, one must admit, there is a confidence that comes when we know we're looking good. We look like ourselves but just turned up a bit...and the confidence and strength that can bring us is a fantastic feeling. That confidence comes through in their portraits. They look strong and confident and proud. Qualities that I want all of my seniors to possess.
That confidence comes through in their smiles, it causes their eyes to sparkle, and when we take photos without smiles, it helps them give me the fiercest looks that showcases their strength. I want my girls to have these photos. I want them to look back on them and remember how strong they felt and how confident. It will make them feel proud and give them the boost they need on days when they're not feeling their strongest, as is bound to happen.
That is why I love hair and makeup for a senior session.
Did you know that two of my senior portrait packages include hair and makeup? I have several professionals that I like to use. We can go to their salons, or they can come to my studio. If you choose a senior portrait package that doesn't include hair and makeup, it can be added for an extra $100.
So, when you schedule your senior portrait session, (hello Class of 2018...spring is here!) be sure to consider adding hair and makeup. Message me for more information!
